Deaf American fans of the Harry Potter series are fiercely committed, but if you are one of them, please consider the following 12 reasons:
- “Dark Lords”
- “Death Eaters”
- “Second Salemers”
- “Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry,”
- “Triwizard Tournament”
Hilariously, I blamed Nyle DiMarco for the lack of accurate details about Harry Potter (in his YouTube vlog), which he should have done by now. Look, you know I don’t hate him. He’s a professional model who works hard to prove that the deaf can kick ass, according to Tyra Banks in the quotation. I love him for his advocacy for deaf rights and sign languages, but unfortunately, I do not know what he knows about Harry Potter. In my opinion, his YouTube was not spectacular enough to share information on this subject. He should have told us much more because he knows that our American culture of the deaf is very complex.
Please check him out (on YouTube, technically). Thanks! If you finished watching what he said, now you know why he left out the determinable details of “Deaf Gains” and “Not Deaf Enough” in the ASL community.
What is Deaf Gain? It defines the positive outcomes that help deaf people in some ways that hearing people can’t do. Deaf people are “having benefits,” “privileged experiences,” or “something successful.” For example, can you talk in the water? No, you can’t. Deaf people can.
What is Not Deaf Enough? I’ll explain later.
You wonder why I frequently repeat three words that came together in the same sentence: “American Deaf People” or “American Deaf Culture,” do you see that? I am an American. I do not have a vocabulary sense of British experience or any personal journeys of other 6 continents. In contrast, deaf people live overseas the world, so if you are reading here and think that you should publish the article about your experience as a Deaf fan of the Harry Potter series, then go for it! Write on Medium.com or any writing platform! Feel free to do it!
12 reasons Nyle did NOT mention this:
- “Dark Lords”
- “Death Eaters”
- “Second Salemers”
- “Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry,”
- “Quidditch & Triwizard Tournament”
He did not explain how Harry Potter’s World resonates with American Deaf People on Cloud 9!
1. DARK LORDS
Copyrighted by J.K. Rowling
Gellert Grindelwald was considering one of the most dangerous Dark Wizards in the late 1940s but is second only to Lord Voldemort in Wizarding History.
Deaf America’s number one enemy is Alexander Graham Bell and is no different than Gellert Grindelwald in a Newt Scamander film series. Why? A.G. Bell was infamously known for his hatred towards the community of American Sign Language. This discrimination is a true story that happened in the early twentieth century, which took place in the period pieces.
Mr. Bell brainwashed everyone with false theologies into the government facilities for many years as long as he existed. He had traveled across America from multiple locations in 50 States each to stop “hiring” or “employing” Deaf people (who were already certified and qualified) to work at boarding schools. He also did not want Deaf people to work in the government, either!
Having spoken out strongly against the ideology of Deaf people being a married couple in America, why, he fears that they beget Deaf DNA into the biology of infants, duly to conspiracy paranoia. He tried to make ripple waves of his false paranoia to both the medical and able-bodied communities to believe the world will be fully Deaf. Meanwhile, Deaf Americans tried to prove him wrong, trying to debunk him as a false statement, but unfortunately, it already fell on deaf ears, so it was a little too late for that. Apparently, the medical community is supportive of Bell’s Ideology, not in our favor or best interests. Interestingly enough, they trusted him more than trust what we told them.
That is why you RARELY see much sign language being used by Deaf children at an early age. They are forced to learn lip-reading, acquiring Cochlear Implants, and other communicative methods of speaking.
2. DEATH EATERS
J.K.Rowling coined “Death Eaters” as a brainwashed cult who followed Lord Voldemort.
As a Harry Potter fan, you already know Death Eaters, as you’ve been introduced in The Goblet of Fire after the two-time disappearances of Lord Voldemort, many of Death Eaters returned to healthy lifestyles, like Lucius Malfoy in the Ministry of Magic and Professor Snape at Hogwarts, but others who continued trying to further Voldemort’s goals.
DEAF EATERS WHO FOLLOWED A.G.B
ASL users who often experienced hostile environments of Deaf Eaters due to the BIGOTRY & DISCRIMINATION alongside two existing vocabulary nouns for “AUDISM” and “ABLEISM.” in both definitions that frequently mentioned on social media. Deaf Americans tend to say “audism” and “audists” rather than “ableists.” But to you, who is not Deaf, you usually say “ableist” and “ableism” only if that makes sense.
Disturbing incidents (non-verbal discrimination) are duly according to Abraham Graham Bell’s mind-controlling doctrines, which are very much alive today as Lord Voldemort’s followers! His very name is the movement’s face, which had been financed, endorsed, donated, and defended by powerful lawyers. Deaf Eaters are Karl White, Meredith K. Sugar, and many others in the likes of A.G.B. Watch this video if you take my meaning.
If you are interested in watching a documentary film on deaf discrimination, “Through Deaf Eyes” on the PBS channel.
If you want to learn more about Deaf Education, you can sign up for Gallaudet University classes. I warned you that you must have a perfect GPA to start enrollment at Gally. It is in Washington, D.C.
Professor Severus Snape and Lord Voldemort were both a half-blood! Snape’s mother is Muggle or No-Maj, and his father is a wizard, correct me if I’m mistaken. Tom Riddle’s mother was a witch, and his father was Muggle or No-Maj.
Parallel Analogies: Half-Bloods Vs. ASL Users
Well, well, well… Not all Deaf Americans are married as a deaf couple, but to some spouses, yes. It depends on whom and choices of romantic relationships as they choose partners for themselves. Biological children who belong to their parents are both DEAF, but perhaps to one deaf parent. Children born capable of hearing do not necessarily share a hereditary gene, DNA (within the disability), but some do. The scientific stats and results have been proven several times repeatedly throughout the years that the DNA does skip at birthing rates. I would NOT call those children “Half-Bloods,” no, automatically considered offensive to non-deaf children. They already have an official name and identity. They are known as CODA (children of deaf adults).
Another group of Deaf Americans varied from being “Moderately Deaf,” “Lately Aging Deaf,” “Hard-of-Hearing”, “Half-Deaf” with one ear that is not the symptoms of hearing loss, and including the “Profoundly Severe Deaf.” Unfortunately, these medical names of hearing losses are for the whom you talk to. Still, please try to remember, NOT every Deaf American is fond of silly labels, but sometimes, create your own identity based on the disability status. You should respect the individual if one or more want to call themselves that way. Again, these decisions they made are neither of your concerns nor personal business if you strongly disagree with auditory checkboxes that they put themselves in. I thought that decision is excellent for me. I’m not telling them how to identify within the status quo, but why not? Let them be!
Oh, right! I forgot to tell you, please, do not ever use the term that offends Deaf Americans, “Hearing-Impaired,” as that term is not how ASL users defined their disability status. Do not ever write that term in any written form or spoken language at all costs!
Why do you find it troubling to accept it? Trust me, not everyone can live with the medical labels created by able-bodied doctors. ASL Users NEITHER want to acknowledge, tolerate, nor support any ableist theology. “Hearing-impairments” are created and invented by A.G. Bell and his cult devotees who refuse to learn American Sign Language or any sign language in multi-foreign countries.
Yes, I’ll admit it, I am aware of some Deaf people who supported the term “Hearing-Impaired”, as I have said before, and I will tell you again: I cannot speak on behalf of everyone, and simultaneously, no, that ain’t gonna happen! Deaf people can decide any terminology label for themselves, but that does not necessarily imply I have to be comfortable with what they say about me. I can only declare myself, not by them. Again, I cannot control how they talk or what they say.
“DEAF” is widely accepted by Gallaudet University, NTID, and state schools in 50 States. ASL users are seen in these local institutions. If you go to these places, you will see how many times they say DEAF in written and spoken languages.
One Deaf male educator living in Rochester, New York, his name is Matthew S. Moore. He alone invented a better term for Deaf Americans by suggesting “People of the Eyes” both in writings and speakings. Perhaps I should medically label the hearing people “able-hear” in opposing to “able-bodied.” What do you think, no?
4. LEGILIMENS VS. ASL INTERPRETERS
Queenie was also extremely accomplished in the Wizarding World long before Harry Potter was born. You see, she was born with the ability to extract feelings and memories from a human mind as Lord Voldemort/Thomas Riddle, who is also a Legilimen.
Funnily, I kept thinking about ASL interpreting agencies here in America who helped translate for the Deaf People. I called them Legilimens, not because they can read our minds, but can read sign language very well. Sadly, ASL interpreters are NOT born to suddenly receptive to sign language. No, they can only learn from experts who taught them in colleges, universities, clubs, schools, etc. It is a learning tool, not to be confused with superpower ability as you see in the Harry Potter movies. Yes, I agreed that Legimimency is an enjoyable experience if it is real without learning sign language or being taught. We deaf people are not born with the superpower to know sign language at an instantaneous second. We MUST learn and be taught by visual experts. As for hearing people, you have to be taught by sounds to hear and listen before speaking vocally at an early age, but you already know that!
Legilimency is wishful thinking. I mean, it’s nice to know we can always fantasize what Legilimency should look like in Deaf Culture. I wished we can replace ASL interpreters with Legilimens who are witches and wizards because they don’t need to learn sign language. They were born with the ability to understand everything we ask them to translate. Legilimens are perfectly accessible, in my personal opinion, ten times better than sign language interpreters (ONLY IF THEY WERE REAL).
As a matter of fact, we do have Pagan communities here in America: Wiccans, Voodoo practitioners, Shamans, Witch Doctors, Psychics, and etc. I don’t know if this Legilimency is effective for the Pagan community. I can try asking them to know if using real spells and petitions without trying to learn sign language would be able to understand everything we say. That would be super cool! ASL Terps, I’m embarrassingly sorry to say, but ASL interpreters are no-Maj. BSL interpreter, I have to apologize to you because J.K. Rowling sees you as a Muggle who lacks British Sign Language knowledge. Honestly, I prefer Legilimens over sign language interpreters since they are easily accessible and should be well-paid! I wish the Wizarding World is real, so we can enjoy hiring Legilimens for as long as we live!
*Ha-ha! This topic is so much fun to discuss! I think the culture of Wizarding World is my favorite one!
5. MUGGLE-BORNS & DEAF KIDS
Quick questions for Potterheads: how well do you think you know Hermione Granger? I hope J.K. Rowling gives you a surprising gift for your knowledge! Ready? Hermione Granger is a Muggle-born, and to whom being born to lovable parents with no magic.
Deaf Babies Are Given Birth To Hearing Parents at 95%!
American medical communities have studied and researched multiple statistic reports of Deaf babies raised and given birth by non-deaf parents (at least 95% of the time). The real question is, why do you see the disturbing image of Deaf babies in handcuffs? Medical communities told the parents to encourage “able-hear” babies to learn sign language much less than 2 years, and in the meantime. In contrast, Deaf babies are forced to learn lip-reading and practicing oral methods with speech therapists. See the irony?! Yes, it is pretty much crazily ironic that non-deaf babies can learn anything where deaf kids do not meet the standards! Difficult to understand why!
Thankfully enough, I haven’t failed to credit Amy Cohen Efron. Jason Roberts made the recent video in 2015. I recalled watching Amy Cohen Efron in 4-part educational videos titled “The Greatest Irony of Deaf Babies.”
I do not know if she is still selling DVDs of that title, but I remembered I got it from my school. I highly recommend you to directly contact her on any social media that you probably found her!
6. MUDBLOODS VS. “NOT DEAF ENOUGH”
You have already read or seen Emma Watson playing as a Muggle-Born Hermione Granger due to the infamous scene with Draco Malfoy in the Chamber of Secrets, as that offensive term (has been verbally abused by Pure-Blooded elites). You should take her as an excellent example of multiple discrimination stories. You can always tune in to Hermione’s frustratingly toxic relationship with Draco Malfoy, always a Mudblood in his eyes. Bellatrix Lestrange bloodily engraved “Mudblood” on Hermione’s arm with her wand in “Deathly Hallows” book and film.
As a Deaf American, I have often had experiences in the boarding Deaf School and socializing with ASL users who are both Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (HOH). In the ASL community, they did exclude some people only based on status quo standards: cliques, elites, gangs, cults, posses, social circles that huddled among themselves!
This did happen at Gallaudet University. Go watch 8-episodic parts of “Deaf U” on Netflix. One cast member said she felt she is not “deaf enough” to be part of “Deaf Elites.” You may call them a cult of something, but really, it is so much more about acceptance, approval, and enrollment. Those who do NOT accept you because they have already decided that you are disqualified from being their best friends, be part of their friendship cliques, fellowship, sisterhood, or whatever they call it.
They only see you as an outsider, an outcast, a pariah, a reject, etc.
Read below in quotation marks:
- “Umm — No offense, I do not think we can be friends, but if we were, my friends would disown me. They are all I have!”
- “You don’t have a deaf family, so why should I be your friend?”
- “Many deaf people like me better because I avoided using Pidgin Signed English. They found you pretty boring every time you use PSE!”
- “You ain’t deaf enough!”
Now, you understand what this is really about. You probably will not make tons of friends who are ASL users from where you live. Apparently, they do NOT see you as his/their equals, so it sometimes happens. He or she probably tries to dumb you down by destroying your self-confidence. Either this or that, Deaf Americans can be seen as bullies or queen bees by being superior to you. If you are pretty curious about how many cliques out there or what types of elite toxicity you will find yourself in. Please go check the true stories in Ukraine (Eastern Europe) in 3 clickbait links here:
7. PURE-BLOODS & DEAF ELITES
Two distancing groups of the wizarding world: Purebloods and Muggleborns, but not all of Pure-bloods are evil like the Malfoys; you can take the Weasleys for their example they’ve shown over movies and books, written by J.K. Rowling.
Team Malfoys or Team Weasleys?
The Malfoys are infamously known for their narcissism, a snobbishly affluent family that you probably have read or seen in the film series Harry Potter. Malfoys will not, nor ever accept any Squib, Muggle-Born, or Half-Blood; they wouldn’t be friends with them. Not even you.
This nasty attitude of Team Malfoys is also a part of the ASL community, such as “So Do You Think You Can Sign Well?“. You’ll meet ASL Malfoys IN REAL LIFE who are pretty much rude and mean-spirited. Sadly, we do have our own Malfoys everywhere. Have you ever heard of Crab Theory no? Please look it up online. Or… You probably are familiar with “rat race,” no? Like a competition and a rivalry, you know?
While writing this, I’m TRYING not to be offensive towards ASL Users who are proud of signs. Still, those attitudes and behaviors that they have are resemblances of elitist-thinking mentality and mindsets:
Proud capital D-word: Deaf Power!
YOUR PEOPLE, YOUR IDENTITY, YOUR MOVEMENT, WHATEVER YOU CALLED IT, IT IS WHAT IT IS!
ASL Malfoys won’t waste any time for self-pity whether you are deaf or not, even the wannabes! Elitists will NOT just expel you out of their daily lifestyle but will frequently be overlooked and ignored due to your intelligence quality or whatever status quo that you have! I reassured you, Potterheads, you sooner will get your ASL Weasleys. Weasleys gotta be there, they better be, and they have to!
That film was globally released in November 2016, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them. Potterheads first learn about the victims of banned magic 70 years long before Harry Potter was born. You beg the questions: what do they mean by “banned magic,” and why are they coined that way? This terminology is told in its massive size of black energy by depicting it as full of misery and pain, known as Obscurus.
You gotta remember that it is only the definition of a thing, not of a person. Although a witch or a wizard can be killed by this very thing, they only suffer by holding down the emotions from within the heart. When they are no longer able to bottle it down, they will explode. OBSCURIAL must be ranging from the age of infancy to 8 years, falling victim to the strict prohibition of practicing witchcraft and wizardry.
Now you know why Obscurials died due to bigotry, toxicity, and discrimination for being who they are as witches and wizards at an early age. In days of witch-hunting, they can be punished for using their abilities to control magic, similar to the Salem witchcraft trials’ victims. Anyone (Muggles or No-Majs) who felt that the magic is an immediate threat must put them to death or shaming them to the minimum limitations.
I think J.K. Rowling was inspired to write Obscurials from the actual accounts of the Salem witchcraft trials. That’s pretty much creative and impressive of her, I must say! This is the perfect message for the able-bodied society who felt and believed Sign Language is a threat to deaf babies learning it.
This movie depicts the era of New Salem Philanthropic Society. In contrast, youths who practiced witchcraft and wizardly are at risk of becoming an Obscurus due to the lowest self-esteem and magical deprivations, but at being one is relatable intersectionality within each of the minority groups that represent all of the sexual identities, gender, misogyny, racism, ableism, and including the neurodiversity. This film tells you that history always makes a habit of repeating itself in the belief systems. We have seen all forms of oppression and tyranny that have proven why it always takes a new form of power in every society. For instance, a virus makes people sick and unwell, but the new ones always come back stronger and still can kill humans—the same difference with memetics.
I guess ASL users and Obscurial witches are in the same boat, aren’t we?
The Second-Salemers movement sought to expose and destroy witchcraft and wizardry. In real life, this behavior frequently occurred in the American Medical Community for many years. Medical doctors insist on the emphasis on FIXING the deaf, the blind, and other disabilities. Oddly enough, A.G. Bell is NOT obsessed with any other form of disability while making the targets of the Deaf Children by prohibiting sign language since The Milan Conference (in Milan, Italy).
In September 1880, those who banned sign language are the results of negative impacts on Deaf children as we know it today. I mean, if it was NOT for the ban, it would have been legalized everywhere as we know it today. The Milan Conference did NOT help since signed languages dramatically divided and detached from the speaking languages as blacks and whites live in the Jim Crow era.
Speaking of Jim Crow, there were accounts of the segregation schools for the Blacks and Whites, including the Deaf children at boarding state schools. Black Deaf People in those times, they created their own sign language, which is NOT similar to White ASL, known as “Black ASL,” which is closely similar to the Vernacular Ebonics and Broken English in spoken languages.
Recently, a young Black Deaf woman, Nakia Smith, taught syntaxes and classifiers of BASL on TikTok vlogs, and she went viral for the whole world to see. You may want to follow her on TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter!
American Deaf Citizens fought for their civil rights in the 20th century. They need to make a living out of employment but were banned from boarding schools with deaf children. Audists had to make sure all children can lip-reading and learning to speak fluently. Now you know why ASL Users had to live off the Social Security benefits because of that. They were constantly discriminated against for not able to speak clearly as they should. 99% of the employment that hires is orally-speaking deaf/HOH person. They would not hire ASL users or cannot speak fluently as hearing people at work, and this discrimination is very much alive today and happening every day!
Also, don’t forget to watch the PBS documentary film, THROUGH DEAF EYES.
10. SQUIBS & CODAS
A wizard-born Muggle/No-Maj is either he or she but is born to Witches and Wizards as a-product-of-love parents, and here they are, Squibs! Imagine a child without magic. What are witches and wizards going to do about them? Some parents hid their children from society in shame.
Some parents told lies to their friends and families about their children without magic. I guess they must be really embarrassed, but they should not.
In my personal opinion, Squibs better be sent to regular schools whereas Muggles/No-Majs go to!
I found “Squibs” pretty funny and laughable. Deaf Americans can make babies and raise children just like everyone who can hear. Deaf adults are capable of functioning sexual intercourse just like everybody. They have given a cute name for hearing children: CODA, aka Children of Deaf Adults.
HOLLYWOOD CELEBS WHO HAVE DEAF PARENTS:
Mark Moshe Kasher in TV series “This Close” (2018 to 2019)
Louise Fletcher in “One Flew Over Cuckoo’s Nest” (1975)
Grace Byers in TV series “Empire” (2015 to 2017)
I guess Mark, Louise, and Grace are PROUD SQUIBS!!!
11. HOGWARTS SCHOOL OF WITCHCRAFT & WIZARDRY
Some Deaf students ACTUALLY go to boarding schools just like Harry Potter did! Harry Potter stayed at the dormitory, so did we! Yeah, funnily, I thought of that often when watching Harry Potter movies AT DEAF SCHOOL! Also, the name of the school is pretty much similar to our school titles. My boarding school is a fully sentencing title: Missouri School for the Deaf, Lexington School for the Deaf, Model Academy for the Deaf, American School for the Deaf, and so on! That spells out loud “For The Deaf” at the front buildings of institutions. You see, “FOR THE DEAF” also in 50 states of America, but it is not the same as Hogwarts. Its title is only seen in “School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.” I felt that it was pretty damn so close, though! LOL!
I wonder J.K. Rowling borrows the idea from our boarding schools’ names for her storytelling creativity but did she?
I have to credit Matthew S. Moore once again. Recently, he made a public video blog on Facebook, known for “Cheers and Jeers.” He asked his community to replace two words of “For The” with “Deaf School” in 50 states. For instance, you say IOWA DEAF SCHOOL. It is better than saying “For The” I agreed with him on Cloud 9. I think “For The” is too weird, it sounds like a pity party to mislead the able-bodied society to give sympathies. “For The” is NOT how I define my experience at a boarding school, no thank you!
As for Potterheads, I cannot speak on behalf of “Witchcraft and Wizardry,” which referred to the boys and girls as wizards and witches. It is a bit sexist, coming to imagine the men against women in that boarding school. “Witchcraft and Wizardry” should have been more of a neutral fronting title, such as non-binary gender issues. I think J.K. Rowling should have avoided using “Witchcraft and Wizardry” in the book series’s future sequels. Hopefully, one day, she decided to rename it as “Hogwarts School of Magic,” just like “Ministry of Magic.”
Unfortunately, recently, J.K. Rowling is under the fire for having problems with transgender people. Looks like she will keep “Witchcraft & Wizardry” in future sequels.
As for Americans, I cannot help but wonder if British Deaf people have boarding schools in Great Britain, do they? I probably will never know. Potterheads, feel free to ask away on the Twitter account. J.K. Rowling always tweets everything in there. I hope she does not block me as she did to one of her fans who have problems with Johnny Depp in the Fantastic Beasts series. I do not have any problems that the Warner Bros cast Johnny Depp, but I think someone else will be a better casting choice. Johnny Depp shouldn’t be typecasted as an evil character. He should be more like Edward Scissorshand or Willy Wonka. Johnny Depp was so perfect in Sweeny Todd, yes, he did play an evil character, but Gellert Grindlewald is not really his acting chops. He CAN’T do it right. I preferred someone else. I did NOT find him that scary enough.
12TH & FINAL. QUIDDITCH/TRIWIZARD TOURNAMENT
I found the link that says:
“The Triwizard Tournament was a magical contest held between the three largest wizarding schools of Europe: Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Durmstrang Institute, and Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, each school is represented by one Champion. Selected Champions compete in three tasks — traditionally judged by the Headmasters or Headmistresses of the competing schools — designed to test magical ability, intelligence, and courage. Champions competed for the honor and glory of winning the Tournament, for the Triwizard Cup, and a monetary prize. The first Tournament was held sometime around the late 13th century.”
– From Wikia.
Deaf Schools celebrate sports and physical activities in my academic experiences, such as football, volleyball, basketball, and tracks/fields. We usually have four Deaf schools coming over to visit the campus, and sometimes, we visit other Deaf schools, but we are not internationally active. That would be a big nope, sorry. If you are referring to the Deaf Olympics, then yes, it is for international purposes. What can happen is to make petitions upon request. You must go through legal proceedings, such as non-profit organizations, to host multiple events and scheduled plans; that is how international sports works.
If you want me to speak for 50 states only in one country: North America. Well, I would say, Great Plains Schools for the Deaf, as I know it. However, I know nothing about the West or East Coasts since I do not live there. All I know is the Midwest sports that are made annually for the Great Plains Deaf Schools. I have seen competitive Deaf schools whose teammates play volleyballs, basketballs, tracks/fields.
Academic Bowl tournaments, all schools are welcomed at Gallaudet University, whether you are from the boarding school or not. If you have met Deaf students from public schools or mainstream schools, they should have “Deaf Programs” during after-school activities.
As it turns out, Harry Potter’s World and Deaf Culture are NOT that different! We have a lot more common than we thought! Wow! This article is dedicated to every other Potterhead who happened to be an ASL user!
You see, Nyle failed to mention 12 reasons why in his video. He only said 4 or 3 references and comparisons between Harry Potter and Deaf Culture.
Hey Nyle, if you’re reading, please update your vlog, your next move!
Can you guess who this is? You are looking at Marlee Matin, who spoke to the young lady in front of her, as a Deaf American Actress; she plays a Deaf Magician on the SYFY CHANNEL. You can check her out on Netflix for the second season of The Magicians; she also appears in the third, fourth, and fifth seasons.
